Locals at national surf selections
FIVE young athletes from the Northern Rivers and the southern Gold Coast are among a group of 24 surfers attending a national selection camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre at Casuarina.
The three-day camp will finalise selections for the TravelSIM Team Australia line-up to contest the International Surfing Association World Junior Championships at Playa Venao, Panama from April 14 to 22 next year.
The five surfers are Kirsten Ogden (Suffolk Park), Tommy Baucaut (Ocean Shores), Amirya Doyle (Rainbow Bay), Eden Putland (Currumbin) and Tallebudgera's Luke Hynd.
From the squad of 24, 12 will be selected with four surfers for each division - under 18 boys and girls, and under 16 boys.
To be selected for the camp, a surfer had to be a finalist at the Australian junior titles, or, depending on their age, have had competitive results in the pro juniors series or in the other major under 16 and under 14 events around Australia.
Surfing Australia national coaching director Martin Dunn said the final selection for the world titles would be based on several factors.
"For each surfer the camp will involve six heats over three days.," Mr Dunn said.
"Their scores are tallied to give them a total, which will make up 55% of the selection process.
"How they went in the Australian titles and how they went in other events during 2011 will also provide a percentage of points.
"There will be points for their final position at the camp event and also points for their fitness levels.
"In the end they will get a score out of 100 and the top four scores from each division will be selected. It's a comprehensive evaluation of each surfer designed to find hardened competitors."
