Long road to repairs for Tweed Shire Council
WET weather is causing long-lasting damage in Tweed and the Tweed Shire Council is feeling the pinch.
"All local governments are feeling the effects of unprecedented weather events," Acting Mayor Michael Armstrong said.
"We're working closely with the State Government to fix the problems."
The council has submitted an application for disaster relief funding for roads.
"This is being assessed by the Roads and Maritime Services," a council spokeswoman said.
"To date, emergency works and urgent items have been approved as required."
It is unlikely we will see any long-term repairs soon as an inspection won't happen until the end of the month or early next month.
"An inspection with RMS assessing officer is anticipated late March/early April," the spokeswoman said.
"Approval to commence restoration works using natural disaster funding would be expected within the month after RMS assessment is completed.
"Items that require detailed design (such as slips) could take six months before approval is given."
Councillor Gary Bagnall said he had inspected numerous sites.
"If we get any more rain, there will be many more land slumps and embankments coming down," he said.
"In high rainfall areas, roads always suffer.
"Council is working overtime to fix these sites and all the road damage throughout the shire.
"Of great concern to our residents are the dozens of potholes that have been plaguing our roads and I feel it is imperative that our gangs fill these as soon as possible."
It might take a while to get them fixed, with the council's two specialist seal-patching trucks parked.
"While the rainy weather continues, we are unable to utilise our two specialist seal-trucks," the council spokeswoman said.
"Consequently to date, emergency temporary patching only has been carried out.
