Longboard and Logger champions crowned at Caba
A DOZEN new long-form specialists can now call themselves Australian champions after a spectacular finish at the Australian Longboard and Logger Titles at Cabarita on Sunday.
In a shock result in the open logger final, the World Surf League's Australian Longboard Open champion Dane Pioli was pipped in the dying stages of the contest by Queensland's Clint Guest, who rode a set wave from the top to bottom of Caba Point, almost turning it inside out.
Guest was, naturally, thrilled.
"To take out the logger title means everything to me,” he said.
"This is the biggest event on my calendar and I love coming down here to the Tweed.
"Cabarita is the best venue to showcase what we can do and I can't wait to hopefully have it back here again next year.”
Tully White (NSW) was crowned women's longboard champ, defeating Emily Lethbridge (QLD) in a frantic finish.
In the men's longboard final Declan Wyton (NSW) edged Frank Murphy (NSW) and the highly-fancied, former title-holder Jack Entwistle (NSW) in a tricky northerly wind.
Ben Dickens (NSW) defended his 2017 crown in both the over 40's men's logger and the over 40's men's longboard in a Herculean performance.
The Australian Longboard and Logger Titles kicked off the Australian Surf Festival, a mobile event along the Tweed Coast, which runs from August 10-27.
