LOCAL government doesn't necessarily conjure up images of fun and games.
However, fun for the entire family is exactly what's on the menu for next week's Local Government Week.
Tweed mayor Barry Longland said he was really looking forward to the week, which was a great opportunity for the council to share the contributions local government made to the community.
"The council can showcase its achievements and share these with the community," Cr Longsland said.
"I encourage everyone to get involved as much as they can.
"On Saturday, the new Murwillumbah community centre will be opened and I hope people will be able to get down to that and take the opportunity to talk to councillors and council staff.
"It will allow people to get an understanding of the role the council plays in the community," mayor Longland said.
Highlight of the week's festivities will be the Family Fun Day on Saturday, November 24, at Knox Park in Murwillumbah, which will also feature the official opening of the new Murwillumbah Community Centre by local MP Justine Elliot.
On Tuesday November 20, from 11.00 am until noon, mayor Longland will officially open the week's activities at the Tyalgum Water Treatment Plant followed by a second opening at the new museum collection store at South Murwillumbah, also opened by the mayor.
The following day, Wednesday November 21, a workshop for community event organisers will be held at the Canvas and Kettle Restaurant next to Murwillumbah's civic centre from 10.00 am until noon.
Also on Wednesday, residents are invited to inspect the Mooball Wastewater Treatment Plant from 11.00 am until 11.30 am for which bookings are essential on (02) 6670 2460.
On Thursday, you'll be able to join a behind-the-scenes tour of the Tweed Laboratory Centre at Tweed Heads South from 10.00 am until 11.00 am for which bookings again are essential on (07) 5569 3103.
On the same day, real diehard wastewater treatment plant buffs will be able to inspect the Banora Point Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade from 11.00 am until 11.30 am.
Friday November 23, will feature an open day at Banora Point Community Centre from 9.00 am until 4.00 pm when board and card games will be the thing to do and will be led Fun Activities Banora Seniors (FABS).
Saturday is Family Fun Day however, that's not the only thing on the agenda.
Tweed River Art Gallery will host an Artisan's Handcrafted Market from 10.00 am until 4.00 pm when original works by local artists will be on sale.
Proceeds of the beautifully crafted wares will support the gallery's future developments.
