Loving the day spa experience at Spicers Peak Lodge

BOOKING yourself into a country retreat whose sole purpose is to make you feel just perfect has been a tantalising dream for me for years.

In fact I am sure it has been a dream for many.

Unfortunately due to the budget restraints inflicted on any young bush journalist it just wasn't going to happen.

Jane Austen may have said "Ahh… there is nothing like staying at home, for real comfort", but clearly, she never had the chance to experience a day spa.

My dream came true when I was invited to be pampered at Spicers Peak Lodge, near Maryvale, 20 minutes east of Warwick.

It didn't take me long before I, too, understood what all the fuss was about with taking a day to just unwind and let yourself be spoilt.

My Girls' Day Out package included a blissfully long body massage, a three-course gourmet lunch, bubbly by the spa and, of course, copious amounts of girl talk.

When looking at any day spa's "menu" as they often refer to their list of services on offer, it can be quite overwhelming wondering what you're in the mood for or what best suits you.

Are you there to take the stress out of a week working 12-hour days?

Is your partner joining you for a couple's massage to spice up your love life?

Or do you just want an excuse to ditch the hubby and kids for a few hours one Saturday?

The best part about going to any day spa is just what's available to make you feel alive and beautiful.

From facials, massages, skin treatments or body scrubs it's all on the list and it's not just for the girls.

Many guys are now either accompanying their partners to the spas or just booking in themselves for a bit of pampering and "manscaping".

My tip for any first-timer is to ask for a menu sampler.

It offers a bit of everything, and you quickly learn what you like or don't like so you know what to ask for on your next visit.

Another bit of advice is to shop around before dipping into the purse for a few hours of relaxation.

From my research, it's surprising just how much prices vary from day spa to day spa - similar retreats even in the same area have massive variations in prices for the same kind of package.

Spicers have several retreats and day spas across south-east Queensland including Tamarind Retreat and Clovelly Estate on the Sunshine Coast and Hidden Vale in the Scenic Rim.

My special day was just that and despite the lack of extra dollars in the savings account, I'll be venturing back for another day of pampering in the not-too-distant future.

I wonder if the boss will approve some overtime this week?
