All the world's a stage for miracle ballerina

A LITTLE ballerina on the Darling Downs must have been born under a lucky star.

Bringalily's Olivia Nason, 6, is a finalist in a competition to find the state's biggest ballet fan. She is one pirouette away from performing on-stage in the Queensland Ballet's production of The Nutcracker.

Not bad for a girl whose parents were told she would never leave the hospital alive.

Her mother Sarah said a 12-week pregnancy scan revealed her daughter to have severe birth defects.

"They found major abnormalities including omphalocele, which means her intestines were on the outside."

Mrs Nason said these abnormalities led to a bleak prediction for her baby's life.

"It was all horrible as you can imagine. We were basically told the baby wouldn't leave the hospital alive and might live for six months in hospital."

Doctors were baffled when the baby arrived a healthy baby girl.

"No-one could find anything wrong with her. She went on to develop normally.

"She was almost born able to do everything.

"She just won the Toowoomba Speech and Drama primary bursary at the eisteddfod - she's in prep.

"There's something about her, she's just magical."

Sarah stumbled across the Suncorp's Wish Upon a Ballet Star Competition when she was looking for ways of fulfilling her daughter's dream to see the Nutcracker.

Entrants had to submit a photo and say why they were Queensland's biggest ballet star.

Olivia's photo was one of ten chosen from 648 entries.

The caption for their winning photo submission read: "The cows need their stage back, can she use yours (please)!

"Doctors said she wouldn't live but our ballerina dances through life.

"Share her magic."
