Luigi loving his new job
WE know small businesses across the coast are doing it tough, so the staff at Toyland Robina took it upon themselves to inject some cheer back into the retail sector.
On Saturday staff placed a hand-written sign in the front window inviting passers-by to act as a human mannequin in the display.
Only a toy shop - or possibly a lolly shop - could successfully take on such a mission as this.
Store manager Lana Bosacci said she and her staff were all "a little bit nutty" - in a fun way - and were trying to adapt to tough economic conditions with a sense of humour.
"Retail isn't as happy as it used to be. People are struggling financially," she said.
"The shop has had a few really hard years and we are trying to draw people in.
"But at the end of the day it is just a bit of fun, and if we can bring a smile to somebody's face, it was worth it."
Staff member Mike Alexander has been fronting the window in character as Luigi, and the search is on to find his Mario.
He has been busting moves in the store front for about a week and gaining a lot of attention, even from reluctant passers-by.
"The response has been amazing. I like the challenge of getting a smile out of somebody who looks like they are having a bit of a down day," Mr Alexander said.
"People try to walk by, but they can't help but look back and laugh. Then they film and take photos."
Ms Bosacci said people needed to make a concerted effort to support local business.
"Businesses like this are run by families. You get a personalised service and that is the real point of difference," she said.
"The point is a lot of retail businesses are closing. If people neglect the little guy in favour of the major chain stores, when the economy improves there won't be any small businesses left and that is not good for competition."
