Lynch goal makes record books

IT TOOK him a while to break into the Suns line-up but young forward, Tom Lynch, is making up for lost time with another impressive display against Geelong at Metricon Stadium on Saturday night.

Lynch, who hails from Victoria, was taken number 11 in the AFL national draft by the Suns and made his debut against Brisbane in the QClash in Round 7.

Drafted as a forward, Lynch was thrust into a back-up ruck role in his debut after an early injury to Daniel Gorringe, and against the Cats he had his first taste of defensive duties.

Lynch said he learnt some valuable lessons about life as an AFL defender.

“(When I was down back) It was coming in pretty quick, I just had to get used to all the body positioning,” he said.

“What it takes to be an AFL defender is a bit different to (being a) forward. I've got to get used to the starting points.”

Conversely, he was still learning while playing on the likes of the Cats' Matthew Scarlett, Darren Milburn and ilk..

“I learned a lot. Probably the main thing was with five minutes to go, and they (the Geelong players) were all still instructing, and not backing off at all,” he said.

“I learned you have got to run out the game no matter what.”

After such a breathtaking first half, where the Suns kicked 10 goals to Geelong's eight, the Suns players were aware the Cats would fight back in the second half. However the avalanche in the second half, where Geelong kicked 13 goals to one, including the last 11 of the match was something Lynch was at a loss to explain.

“We were pretty happy with the first half, but (Gary) Ablett and (coach, Guy) McKenna told us not to shy away from our structures, and that they (Geelong) will run out the second half.

“I don't know what happened (after half-time).”

While Lynch will go down in the history books as the first Suns player to kick a goal at Metricon Stadium, the goal everyone was talking about was Karmichael Hunt's 60-metre bomb in the second quarter.

Lynch was also impressed with Hunt's first goal in the AFL.

“It was a crucial goal at that stage, it was a good finish by ‘K',” he said.
