Machete attackers on the run
A 58-YEAR-old man is recovering in Lismore Base Hospital with machete wounds after a violent break and enter west of Casino on Sunday night.
The victim was at his Mallanganee home alone at 6.45pm when six males forced entry, assaulted him and then demanded money.
They escaped in two vehicles with an undisclosed amount of property.
But police have not ruled out a connection between the attackers and the victim.
Richmond Local Area Command crime manager Detective Inspector Greg Moore said police were appealing for information from the community.
He would not confirm the use of a machete, and said Mallanganee residents did not need to be alarmed.
However a local resident, who did not want to be named, said this was the third incident of this kind in the area and a frightened community wanted police to take strong action against the offenders.
"We're sitting around wondering if we're going to be the next one targeted," he said.
"It's just terrible to think that you can be at home and then suddenly a machete gets slashed across your face.
"Now he's in hospital, he's in a pretty bad way and his house is trashed."
The offenders were described as being Caucasian, in their mid 20s, wearing black clothing with shaved or short hair and armed with weapons, including a machete.
They left in two vehicles with one described as a red older squarer model sedan in good condition, similar to a Ford Meteor.
The other was described as a small black four-wheel drive, possibly a two-door Rav4, Daihatsu or similar.
