Boy, 10, collects tonne of food for animals over five years

ANIMALS in Mackay won't be forgotten this Christmas. Emmett Withers has generously been collecting food for Mackay's shelter animals for five years.

The food was distributed to Animal Rescue Queensland or Mackay Animal Rescue Society.

Emmett, 10, this year has gathered about one and a half tonnes of food.

"We've transferred the pet food I've collected to MARS and ARQ," he said. "There's a lot more dog and cat food than this time last year.

"I like giving animals a Christmas.

"Some families have Christmas dinner and share their presents around but pets are usually left inside with nobody to play with. I want pets to be a part of the family this Christmas dinner."

He said eventually he wanted to become an RSPCA inspector.

"I want to continue my work with the RSPCA."

Jeffery, a mini foxie cross who Emmett is pictured with, is also up for adoption with ARQ.

Friends of the RSPCA Mackay co-ordinator Alison Frazer said animals up for adoption could be found through Animal Rescue Queensland or MARS.

"Every year we do a collection of food given to us by the community and Emmett is our youngest volunteer," she said.

For ARQ, visit http://www.animalrescueqld.org.au and for MARS, phone 0407 353 301.
