Chances not good for man, 84, off cruise ship

THERE is little hope for a man feared lost overboard a ship heading to Australia from a cruise around New Zealand.

The nationality of the 84-year-old man missing from the Sun Princess is not yet known and this afternoon New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade had no information about the missing man.

The man was reported missing from the Sun Princess early today.

The ship was heading for Sydney but turned back east to look for the missing man about 8.30am NZT after crew searched the ship.

The man was believed to have been lost overboard about 300km east of Sydney.

A Princess Cruises spokeswoman said the ship was on a 13-night cruise around New Zealand. It was in Tauranga last Thursday, Auckland on Friday and the Bay of Islands on Saturday.

"The search is continuing. Out of consideration to the family we are not releasing any details on the passenger," she said at noon.

An Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokesman said a plane was also searching for the man.

Spokesman Mal Larson said he believed the man went overboard in rough conditions and 2-3 metre swells.

"Given his age and the conditions we think the chances of survivability are low," he said.
