James Bond refused bail

A MURWILLUMBAH man charged over a stabbing at Murwillumbah this week was refused bail at Tweed Heads Local Court yesterday.

James Bond, 48, of Myrtle St, was seeking bail on charges of common assault, recklessly wounding another person and two other charges.

The police prosecutor wanted bail refused because of the seriousness of the main charge, and that the alleged act was committed in a public place.

It was alleged Bond came out of Proudfoot Ln and confronted a man and woman in the main street of Murwillumbah on Thursday.

After a short argument the woman was punched and the man was stabbed three times.

Witnesses to the attack intervened and detained the accused until police from Murwillumbah Police Station arrived.

Police recovered a knife close to the scene.

In refusing bail, registrar Karryn Gavenlock said she had weighed up the seriousness of the charges.

“My job is to ensure the protection of the community, so I’m not inclined to grant bail,” Ms Gavenlock said.

Bond was visibly shaken by the decision and asked the registrar not to send him to jail.

“This is the first time I have been in trouble in 10 years,” Bond said.

“Yesterday was just a spur of the moment thing, I don’t even remember what happened,” he said.

Bond will appear at Tweed Heads Local Court again on Monday.
