Man bashed, robbed at Kirra hotel
Coolangatta Police Duty Sergeant Billy Kaz said a 51-year-old New South Wales man received severe facial injuries in what he described as a low act.
"A male person was assaulted and robbed in the toilets of the Kirra Hotel by one male individual who was socialising with him throughout the night," Sgt Kaz said.
"The suspect was only known as a one off acquaintance and took advantage of the victim and his age."
Sgt Kaz said the suspect, believed to be in his 30s, followed the victim into the toilets where he punched him continually in the head, knocking him to the ground, and robbed him before fleeing the premises.
"The victim was seen crawling out of the toilets on his knees and arms where a number of other patrons assisted him."
Coolangatta Police are calling for those persons to come forward to assist them as witnesses. They can contact Crime Stoppers on 1300 333 000.
The victim was taken to The Tweed Hospital and later transported to the Gold Coast Hospital.
"He received facial injuries from being punched in head repeatedly," Sgt Kaz said.
Hotel manager Geoffrey Wallace said the offender was not known in the pub but the victim was a regular.
"The bloke is a really good bloke and good patron here," Mr Wallace said.
"He’s a bit shaken up by it.
"The man had been drinking with him for quite some time from what I got told. He’d seen him winning money at the TAB all day."
Mr Wallace said the offender stole more than $300 from the man.
"We’ve done our best by giving the footage to the police but being in the toilets we can’t have cameras in there.
"We don’t know who he (the offender) is. He was just a blow in and they’re the ones you always have problems with.
"Unfortunately, it’s one of those things that do happen."
Mr Wallace said the hotel is usually good in regards to such incidents.
Sgt Kaz said police were hopeful of an arrest thanks to the hotel’s footage.
"Police have leads in relation to the matter and they are being followed up by the Coolangatta CIB (criminal investigation branch) in relation to locating the suspect."
If any persons have further information they should contact Sgt Kaz or the Coolangatta CIB on (07) 5589 8444.
Sgt Kaz said this latest crime is a different to previous assaults in the area, which have mostly occurred on the street and been fuelled by alcohol and testosterone.
