Man charged over murder of nurse Mary Louise Wallace

A MAN has been arrested and charged with the murder of a nurse on Sydney's north shore more than 30 years ago.

Mary Louise Wallace, 33, disappeared in the early hours of September 24, 1983.

She was on a night out with friends at the Alpine Inn Hotel in Crows Nest where she met a man who later offered her a lift.

She has not been heard from since and her body has never been found.

New South Wales Police advised a 61-year-old man was arrested on Friday at Gladesville in Sydney's south-west in relation to her murder.

Detective Chief Inspector John Lehman said it has been a long investigation and the Homicide Squad worked hard to get the result.

"They are very pleased with the result, but they know it is just the start of a long court process," he told reporters.

"There is physical evidence, scientific evidence, which will include DNA."

An inquest into the case closed in December 2010 with Deputy State Coroner Paul MacMahon referring a person of interest to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
