Man charged over armed robbery

 

A 42-YEAR-old man was today charged with the armed robbery of a Murwillumbah credit union on May 30.

The man was also charged with firearm and drug offences after information from members of the public helped police investigators track him down.

Inspector Shane Diehm said a 26-year-old man was also charged with drug and firearm offences.

“The arrest was as a result of information received from members of the public and swiftly acted upon by investigators,” Inspector Diehm said.

“This is a great example of police and their local community working together to combat crime and anti-social behaviour.

“Officers within Tweed/Byron LAC remain focussed on reducing crime and I encourage members of the community to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information relating to crime or suspicious behaviour.”

The robbery on the Murwillumbah branch of the Southern Cross Credit Union stunned the local community.

Police allege the 42-year-old man entered the Commercial Road branch and threatened staff with a firearm.

He is accused of stealing cash then fleeing along the western bank of the Tweed River.

No shots were fired during the incident and no-one was injured during the incident.

The man was arrested after police executed a search warrant at premises in Quarry Rd, Murwillumbah.

The 42-year-old man was refused bail and will appear in Tweed Heads Local Court tomorrow.

The 26-year-old man was granted conditional bail to appear in Tweed Heads Local Court on Monday 4 July .
