Banora man killed in bypass crash was walking for help

UPDATED, 10.25am Monday:  The 27-year-old man hit by a car and killed on the Tugun Bypass about 1am Saturday was from Banora Point.

Coolangatta police Sergeant Billy Kaz said the man was involved in a single car collision, his car coming to a stop near the centre divide of the highway.

He then walked near the Stewarts Rd, Currumbin Waters, on-ramp towards a traffic control light.

The man was then hit and killed by a car travelling northbound.

Police believe the man may have thought the light contained a manned camera that could be flagged for help.

Sgt Kaz was unable to detail the timeframe between when the man crashed his car and when he was killed by a car travelling northbound.

He said the incident was a reminder for drivers to be cautious when exiting their vehicle after a crash and to seek the nearest emergency service phone for help if a mobile phone is unavailable.

Queensland Police Service Forensic Crash Unit was investigating the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
