Court hears of family tragedy in death over stolen TV

AN ARGUMENT over a stolen TV escalated into a family tragedy that left one man dead and another with stab wounds at Bribie Island.

Nicola Maria Baillie has been charged with murdering her partner, Darrin Karl Gay, and attempting to murder her daughter's boyfriend, Nathan Evans, in April, 2012.

But in the Brisbane Magistrates Court, where Baillie faced a committal hearing, Mr Evans was questioned about why the knife used in the alleged attack was in his room.

The court heard Ms Baillie, Mr Gay, Mr Evans and Mr Evans' partner, Ms Baillie's daughter, Carissa Tarawhiti, were staying at a Bribie Island home in 2012.

The foursome were in Tweed Heads on April 14 when, Mr Evans said, they decided to steal a television from Big W.

Mr Evans orchestrated the theft and the group decided they would sell it to fund a trip to Western Australia to seek out a new start.

Mr Evans told the court there was a fight in the car after he said he didn't want to sell the TV anymore.

Mr Evans claimed Mr Gay punched him in the face.

The committal hearing continues.
