Man dies in hotel stabbing

A MAN is dead after he was stabbed at the Henry Rous Hotel last night.

While details remained sketchy as this paper prepared to go to press, Richmond Local Area Command crime manager Detective Inspector Greg Moore confirmed police were called to the popular drinking spot in River Street at about 6.25 last night after reports of an altercation between two men.

“Police are following up investigations into an incident involving two males at the Rous Hotel at Ballina,” he said.

“One male as a result of an altercation sustained a stab wound to the chest area and was conveyed to Ballina Hospital where he was later pronounced dead,” he said.

“A 24-year-old male is currently assisting investigators with the matter.”

Inspector Moore declined to confirm suggestions that the victim, a 40-year-old believed to be a local, was stabbed with a screwdriver.

It is unknown if the two knew each other, Inspector Moore said.

“We are still in the process of establishing the reason for the alteration,” he said.

More information to come as available.
