Man dies in house fire
A MAN was killed when fire ripped through a Currumbin home early yesterday.
Flames had already destroyed the multi-level timber and brick Domain Drive home by 3am as Queensland Fire and Rescue Service officers arrived.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus searched the home and located an as- yet-unidentified deceased man, while bystanders assisted an 80-year-old female resident to escape the blazing property.
Queensland Police Southern Patrol Services Acting Inspector Chris Ahearn said forensic testing would be required to identify the man.
“There's no knowledge of the cause of the fire,” Acting Insp Ahearn said.
“Forensic investigators are at the scene, but inquiries suggest there's no suspicious circumstances.”
He said the elderly woman had suffered superficial burns and smoke inhalation, but had not been seriously injured.
“There has been significant damage to the building,” Acting Insp Ahearn said.
“It's in a dangerous state in terms of investigators accessing it, but police are working with the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service to make it safe for investigations.”
A Queensland Department of Community Safety spokesman confirmed the woman was assisted from the burning building prior to emergency services personnel arriving.
Paramedics treated her at the scene and she was taken to John Flynn Hospital as a precaution.
