A TASTELESS game with his girlfriend has almost cost a Clifton man his freedom when it saw him charged with 13 child sex offences.

Sean Roy Elburg and his girlfriend Juanita May Stanley created a game last August, in which they would see who could procure naked images and videos from underage girls the fastest.

Over a three-day period, Elburg received photos from two girls - one aged 13 and the other 15.

The Warwick District Court heard the then-18-year-old man believed the 13-year-old girl was 14.

Elburg, now 19, promised the15-year-old girl he would have sex with her if she sent naked photos of herself and she obliged with a photo of her breasts and a video of her performing a sex act on herself.

The 13-year-old girl initially sent photos of herself in swimwear and underwear.

When Elburg persistently asked for naked photos and threatened to kill himself if she didn't comply, the girl sent photos of her 13-year-old friend's breasts and genitalia and passed them off as her own.

After receiving the images, Elburg sent a photo of his own genitalia to the young girl.

Barrister Robbie Davies told the court his client's actions were not driven by sexual gratification but rather were part of a "tasteless and inappropriate" game between the couple.

Mr Davies highlighted the fact his client was close in age to that of the victims and there had been no intention of sexual contact between Elburg and the girls.

Since his arrest in September, Elburg has been banned from entering Clifton as a condition of his bail and faced a real threat of jail time.

The case will likely come as a warning to parents and teenagers on the dangers of the exploding trend of sexting and Elburg yesterday expressed remorse for his actions.

"I've learnt my lesson and I know it was a stupid thing to do - well, now I do because I know the consequences," he said. "I'm truly sorry I've done it."

The Clifton man pleaded guilty to 10 counts procuring a child to engage in a sexual act, two counts of exposing a child to indecent material and one of possessing child abuse images.

He was sentenced to 12 months jail, which was fully suspended, and ordered to complete 18 months probation.

Stanley, who was 17 at the time of the offences, has already pleaded guilty to three charges related to the incident.

During Elburg's sentencing it was determined Stanley was actually too young to be charged with two of the three offences.

It is understood she will appear in court at a later date to have her guilty plea vacated from the two offences she was wrongly convicted of.

She will also be re-sentenced on the remaining charge of possessing child exploitation material.
