Maryborough man drowns in rowing accident

AN ELDERLY man has drowned in the Mary River near Brother's Island at Beaver Rock.

Paramedics were called to the area, 14km north east of Maryborough, about 4.55pm Monday.

Maryborough Police Sergeant Paul Jervis said two men had been in a rowing boat on the river when one of the men fell overboard.

"They were assisted by a yacht which was in the area," he said.

Sgt Jervis said the man was local to the Maryborough region.

Police expected to inform the man's next of kin overnight.

The drowning is not being treated as suspicious.

Paramedics treated a 90-year-old man who was believed to be in shock.

Hervey Bay Water Police also attend the incident.

Beaver Rock resident Royce Sommerfeld said he saw three police cars and an ambulance go past his house in the afternoon.

"My son went to the boat ramp and there was a police boat and three police cars there," he said.

"I saw the ambulance go down there as well.

Mr Sommerfeld saw the first police car head to the area about 2pm and the second followed about 4.45pm.
