Man faces court after lengthy pursuit in stolen car

A MAN has faced court after allegedly stealing a car at Tweed Heads on Saturday before leading police on a 60km pursuit.

About 8.20am, a 35-year-old man allegedly demanded car keys from a woman, 24, at Brett St, Tweed Heads, before running away after a short altercation. He then allegedly forced a 69-year-old man from the driver’s seat of a Toyota Camry at the nearby Kennedy Dr boat ramp and drove away.

About 8.45am, the car was seen speeding on the Pacific Hwy at Clothiers Creek and refused to stop for police.

The vehicle later crashed into the rear of another vehicle north of Ewingsdale Rd, Ewingsdale.

The accused was taken to Byron Bay Police Station, charged with robbery, taking a conveyance, attempted robbery, assault and dangerous driving and was remanded in custody to appear in court this week.
