Man fined for shooting roos

A FARNSFIELD farm worker had no idea he was doing anything wrong when he shot two kangaroos in the paddock of a commercial rural property, according to his defence lawyer.

Carl Anthony Murray pleaded guilty in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court today to killing the protected animals and was fined $1100 for the January 22, 2013 incident.

In Murray's defence, barrister Craig Ryan said his client had previously worked with professional roo shooters out west shooting Red Kangaroos and was unaware that eastern greys were a protected species.

Mr Ryan said the property Murray was working on was a large-scale commercial mixed crop and cattle property and he considered kangaroos to be pests.

In handing down the $1100 fine, Magistrate John Smith said Murray's action was a Class 4 offence under the Nature Conservation Act.
