Man found dead in Coolangatta park, drugs suspected

POLICE will conduct an autopsy after a man was found dead in the toilets at Goodwin Park, Coolangatta.

God's No Name Church pastor and homeless aid worker Lyn Borthistle said she suspected the man overdosed on drugs, but Coolangatta police say no cause of death has been confirmed yet

If a drug overdose is to blame, it will be one of at least two similar incidents in as many months.

Ms Borthistle was devastated by the discovery, having held the man in her arms and encouraging him to seek help last Sunday at her weekly barbecue for the homeless in the same park the man died on Thursday.

"He was like a son to me; he was only 36-years-old," she said.

"I put my arms around him on Sunday and we were talking about him entering rehab.

"He came up to me the other day and he just said to me 'I've failed' and we talked about getting him some help again."

Tweed police said previously they had suspicions about a particularly dangerous batch of drugs getting around the community.

They warned people to stay clear of any and all drugs, pointing out the tragic consequences illicit substances can cause.
