Man leads police on chase then assaults them at Chinderah

UPDATED, 5.18pm: A 47-year-old man will appear in Tweed Heads Local Court on Wednesday, charged with the assault of a police officer.

The man from Ashmore, Queensland, has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, resist arrest, exceed speed, police pursuit - not stop and possession of a prohibited item.

The man was refused bail.

 

INITIAL report, 2.23pm:  A man remains in custody after he allegedly assaulted a police officer at Chinderah on Tuesday.

A statement released by NSW Police said a highway patrol officer detected a Nissan Pathfinder travelling at 130kmh in the 100kmh zone near Barney's Point Bridge, Banora Point, about 6.40am.

Police said a pursuit was initiated when the Nissan driver failed to stop.

They said the 47-year-old male driver, from Ashmoreeventually stopped and exited his vehicle before approaching the highway patrol officer.

It's understood the two men struggled, with the officer being assaulted.

Police said a member of the public helped to subdue the 47-year-old.

The driver was arrested and taken to Tweed Hospital for blood and urine testing.

He was then taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and is still in custody.

The police officer, a senior constable, was treated for minor injuries and later released.
