Man pleads guilty to Mac attack

A MAN has pleaded guilty to fatally shooting another man at a McDonald's restaurant on the Gold Coast more than two years ago.

In the Brisbane Supreme Court yesterday, Samuel Mark Friedman, 26, of Surfers Paradise, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Richard Doherty, 34, and unlawfully wounding Ben Matthews, 26, at Burleigh Heads on August 15 2009.

Initial police reports suggested the shooting occurred on the footpath outside the McDonald's store on the Gold Coast Highway just before 6am when Mr Doherty was fatally shot in the torso.

Mr Matthews was taken to Gold Coast Hospital with injuries, but recovered.

During the initial investigation, police could not tell if the meeting between the men was arranged but believed it was not a random attack as no guns or weapons were found when one of the victim's cars was searched.

Judge Julie Dick has remanded Friedman in custody. He will be sentenced at the same court on Thursday.
