Man punched in the face by mugger at Banora carpark
A MAN is set to face Tweed Local Court today over a mugging at Banora Point where one victim was punched in the face and left unconscious in the car park.
About 6.30pm on Monday the 30-year-old approached several people in the car park of Banora Central shopping centre car park on Fraser Dr, asking for money.
The man was declined a number of times before he approached a third person who he grabbed on the shoulder and punched in the face, causing him to fall to the ground and lose consciousness.
The accused lent over the unconscious man and stole an amount of money from his wallet before fleeing the scene.
A witness followed the accused to Twin Towns Juniors Club, observing him from a safe distance until several police cars swarmed the scene.
The accused was arrested and taken to Tweed Heads Police Station where he was charged with one count of aggravated robbery, one count of intimidation and two counts of demanding money with menace.
Tweed-Byron LAC Inspector Bobbie Cullen said the man was refused police bail and was set to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court today.
"We thank the witness for being brave enough to follow the accused from a safe distance and give us his location," Insp Cullen said.
"It meant he was arrested more quickly than if there was an investigation involving CCTV footage, etc."
