Arrest made following car shooting in Gladstone

Shooting accused denied bail after taxi fired at in CBD

A MAN has been refused bail after a gun was fired at a taxi in Gladstone's CBD on Sunday morning.

John Eric Lamport, 25, was denied bail and remanded in custody to reappear on September 9, after a brief appearance in Gladstone Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Lamport was charged with one count of unlawful possession of a weapon and one count of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, as well as drug offences.

Police alleged the incident took place outside a Yarroon St residence at 3am on Sunday morning, after a disagreement between a man and two women.

The two women are believed to have gotten into a taxi outside the home, and as the taxi drove away a small-calibre firearm was discharged.

A bullet entered the rear of the taxi to the left of the number plate, but neither the two women nor the driver were injured.

Police searched an address on Tuesday, which resulted in five people being arrested and taken into custody.

One was released without charge, while three others were charged with drug offences.

A number of firearm-related objects were seized in the search.

Detective Senior Sergeant Luke Peachey said police reacted after the driver reported the incident on Sunday afternoon.

"The driver didn't believe it was a bullet, but upon inspection we identified it was a bullet," he said.

Detective Senior Sergeant Peachey said police had not made the incident public because they did not want to jeopardise the investigation in its early stages.

"We had our strategies in place and didn't want to jeopardise our investigation as we didn't know where the bullet had originated from," he said.

Police investigations are continuing and they have asked the public to assist, because they believe there may have been bystanders who saw the incident. They would like to speak with anyone who saw the incident.
