Man who allegedly made death threat against mayor held

A MAREEBA man who kicked up a stink and allegedly made a death threat to Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore over an effluent dump site has been denied bail.

Gavin Neil Squair, 45, was allegedly angry over a council decision earlier this month to install a second site for campervan and motorhome users to dump their waste.

The new spot was opposite the Mareeba Heritage Centre on James Street and is connected to the town's sewerage system.

Police alleged Mr Squair took to social media on Wednesday to make a threat against Mr Gilmore and an investigation was launched.

It is also alleged that he threatened council workers on Tuesday.
