GREENGROCERS say fruit and vegetables are selling well this Christmas with mangoes and watermelons an especially good buy.

Large juicy mangoes were going for as low as $20 a carton, or three for five dollars and seedless watermelons barely reached over a dollar at many fruit and vegetable markets.

Remarkably, cucumbers were selling for as little as 9c and were proving very popular.

Stone fruits and peaches were also doing well, and selling more than expected thanks to a great season and very reasonable prices.

Supermarkets were packed today and this would no doubt encourage people to shop at smaller fruit wholesalers and greengrocers to avoid the rush.

As a bonus they will be supporting their local community and helping small family owned businesses this Christmas.

Justin Clinch of Tweed Discount Fruit and Veg invited shoppers to come and support local business while getting a bargain or two.

"Our fruit and veg is always super fresh and our staff are friendly and helpful," he said.

Mr Clinch said that while supermarkets were making things a little quieter this year he'd still been busy.

"It's been flat out mate," he said.

He encouraged people to come and have a look at the produce on offer.

"Come down and support your local greengrocer," he said.

"We have cheap fruit and veg and you can beat the rush of the supermarkets."

Most greengrocers we contacted said they were staying open until at least 6pm to serve last minute shoppers.
