Man’s alleged sick messages on Pinterest

A NSW man has been arrested on suspicion he used the picture platform Pinterest to initiate sexually explicit conversations with children.

Federal police officers swooped on the man at his Blue Mountains home and arrested him.

The 42-year-old Katoomba man was refused bail to appear in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday after allegedly using a carriage service to transmit indecent communications with a person under 16.

Australian Federal Police started investigating the man after receiving a report from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children in September last year that a user was lying about his age on Pinterest and interacting with children.

The US social media site boasts 400 million monthly users around the globe, who use the service to share inspirational pictures on virtual pinboards.

Officers were able to identify the man and arrested him on Monday.

Footage released by AFP shows a uniformed officer putting the handcuffed man in the back of an unmarked silver vehicle.

Officers also seized a mobile phone and two tablet computers from the home, the statement said.

Speaking generally, AFP Detective Sergeant Jarryd Dunbar urged parents to be aware of the risks children face online.

"Any website that enables users to interact freely with one another is a platform that offenders can use to groom children," he said.

"Parents, you must talk to your children about these risks and foster a relationship where your child feels comfortable telling you who they are speaking to online. This way, if a predator does reach out to your child, you can take steps to make sure they are safe and report the matter to police to prevent further offending."

If convicted, the man risks 10 years in jail.
