Manslaughter charge over crash

A 43-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with manslaughter and a list of other offences following an investigation into a fatal crash on the Pacific Highway earlier this month.

About 6.15am on Wednesday January 5, the man was driving a silver Ford Falcon at speed along the Pacific Highway near Tabbimoble when it left the road and smashed into trees.

A 14-year-old boy, who was the front-seat passenger, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene while a 14-year-old girl in the backseat sustained serious pelvic and leg fractures.

The incident sparked an exhaustive investigation by police from the Coffs/Clarence Local Area Command and the Ballina Crash Investigation Unit.

Following the investigation, the driver of the vehicle was arrested at his Tyndale home at about 10.15am on Thursday and taken to Grafton Police Station where he was charged with:

  • Manslaughter
     
  • Dangerous driving occasioning death – drive under influence
     
  • Dangerous driving occasioning death – drive dangerous manner
     
  • Dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive under influence
     
  • Dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive manner dangerous
     
  • Negligent driving (occasioning death)
     
  • Negligent driving (occasioning grievous bodily harm)
     
  • Driving with a middle range PCA (blood alcohol content)

He was granted conditional bail to appear in Grafton Local Court on Monday, March 28.
