Mark 'Chopper' Read in hospital as cancer fight continues

NOTORIOUS Victorian crime figure Mark "Chopper" Read remained in palliative care at a Melbourne hospital on Tuesday.

The terminally ill ex-con-turned best-selling author is in the final stages of liver cancer.

The 58-year-old's manager asked the media for privacy but said regular updates on his condition would be released throughout the week.

Read's tales about the 23 years he spent behind bars in some of the country's hardest prisons, which were brought to the big screen in the 2000 movie Chopper, turned the underworld criminal into an Australian celebrity.

In the past decade, he has been actively involved in a number of charities and spoken openly about his desire for more deserving recipients to receive the liver transplant he would need to save his life.

He married his long-term friend Margaret Cassar in 2003 and has two boys.
