Massive talent from little folk on show in Little Big Shots

AUSTRALIA'S biggest kid, Shane Jacobson, will make his hosting debut on Channel 7's newest talent show Little Big Shots.

But it's not your average talent quest. It's for kids only, there are no judges and you can do anything - and they mean anything.

"There are no judges, no competition," Shane tells The Guide.

"You can't pit them against each other because they're all so different.

"In the US there was a girl that went on the show because she has a duck as a best friend.

"To be honest, as a parent, I love the fact that they're not pitted against each other.

"I love it because they're all so unique."

Most of us were eating dirt and battling bed-wetting at the age of these wunderkinds. Shane has no confidence - at all - that little Shane would make the cut.

"I don't think I'd get on it; I wouldn't be good enough," he says, laughing.

"When I was 10 I thought I was pretty talented for putting my fork in my mouth or drinking without spilling on myself or tying my shoes.

"Honestly I don't know what I did for first 10 to 15 years of my life.

"I had to wait until I was old enough to host it. I just hung around entertainment long enough and acted like a child."

While Shane has the hosting criteria nailed, he can't claim ownership rights over the show's premise.

"The idea actually came from Ellen DeGeneres's show, when she'd have kids she found on the internet perform on the show," he says. "Suddenly it wasn't 'Have you seen that new George Clooney movie?' it was 'Did you see that amazing little kid on Ellen?'

"Then the TV show came from demand, because there were so many amazing little talents.

"It wasn't for competition it was just 'You've gotta see what this kid can do'."

Shane says he's not against competition, but it's simply not the nature of the show.

"I have nothing against shows that put kids in competition," he says. "Life is competitive.

"There are certain types of competition that are intended to improve skills, like sports.

"You compete to challenge yourself and better your skills.

"But this is pure entertainment, its aim is to be enjoyed."

The performances - whatever they may be - make up a large portion of the entertainment, but don't assume the couch chats are a formality.

The kids see Shane as one of them, and cute comedy gold ensues.

"The other great thing is you don't know where it's going to go when we sit on the couch and have a chat," he says.

"Imagine the freedom I'm given - I'm not a parent, they can do no wrong.

"We don't know what they're going to say.

"You've got common ground but then it just steers off and before you know it you're not talking about anything to do with it all."

Little Big Shots premieres on Sunday at 7pm on Channel 7.
