Matilda The Musical leads Helpmann Awards nominations
MATILDA The Musical leads this year's Helpmann Award nominations, announced tonight in Brisbane.
The musical, inspired by Roald Dahl's story and featuring original music by Tim Minchin, received 13 nods including Best Musical and Best Original Score.
The 14th annual awards honour the best in live performance, spanning musicals and plays to dance, opera and comedy.
"This year has been a remarkable year for live performances in Australia reflecting a vibrant industry with more than 18 million people attending shows across the country and ticket revenues of $1.5 billion," LPA Chief Executive Evelyn Richardson said.
Matilda is followed by the Queensland Theatre Company's Ladies in Black, which received six nominations and Little Shop of Horrors, which recently finished its Brisbane season at QPAC, on five nods.
Stars of the stage and screen including Cate Blanchett, Colin Friels, Noni Hazlehurst and Richard Roxburgh were also nominated for their drama work.
This year's 27th annual Bluesfest is nominated for Best Contemporary Music Festival, a category the renowned musical festival has already won four times.
Michael Lynch will receive this year's Sue Nattrass Award and Toby Thatcher will receive the final Brian Stacey Award for Emerging Australian Conductors.
The 16th annual Helpmann Awards will be held at Sydney's Lyric Theatre on July 25.
