Mayor backs solar bins for fewer collections and less mess
TWEED Mayor Gary Bagnall wants to tackle overflowing bins in the shire with solar-powered rubbish-compacting bins.
Recently Samira Khan, from Smart Bins, brought one of the devices to his office so he could learn about the technology.
"Once the rubbish gets to a certain level the compressor kicks in and compresses it," he said.
"The bin keeps compressing until it is nearly full, at which time it notifies the office or your phone that it needs emptying."
Cr Bagnall said the Smart Bins could hold three times the amount of waste of a regular bin, and would save on trips to empty barely-full bins.
"We are going to check them out for our shire," he said.
