Dam future depends on mayor

THE future of controversial Tweed Shire Council plans for a dam at Byrrill Creek could hinge on today's decision on who will be mayor for the next 12 months - with the winner set to hold a casting vote on the issue.

Yesterday incumbent mayor Kevin Skinner said he was "certainly concerned" that the dam proposal, which he backed last year by using his mayoral casting vote, could be shelved if an anti-dam councillor became mayor.

Deputy Mayor Barry Longland, who is one of the three-front runners tipped as a chance to be mayor after this afternoon's annual vote by fellow councillors, voted against the dam.

But he has nominated Cr Skinner for the position, even though he has been nominated himself by anti-dam councillor Dot Holdom.

Another front-runner, Warren Polglase, said the future of the dam project "depends on who is in the chair".

Cr Longland said he remained opposed to the Byrrill Creek Dam but would not say if he would use a mayoral casting vote to sink the plan if the issue arose again.
