Mayor expected to explain all about GM sacking tonight

TONIGHT'S Tweed Shire Council meeting promises to be eventful, with many waiting with bated breath to hear mayor, Barry Longland's explanation for the sacking of GM, David Keenan.

With expectations of a packed gallery, the mayor last Friday promised to shed light on the decision to terminate the GM's contract.

NSW Planning's White paper is on the agenda, with workshops planned to inform the community on proposals contained in the plan.

Cr Katie Milne is calling for the council allocate $100,000 to a climate change fund in the 2013/2014 budget.

Other items include the future of a former BP service station in Kingscliff and the possible impact of site contamination and cost of addressing the problem.

The removal of iconic Hoop Pines from Collier St, Cudgen is an emotive subject.

The trees are a memorial to Dutch paratroopers from the second worl war.

The council proposes that the trees be removed and Norfolk pines be planted, with a plaque to commemorate the man who planted them, be placed on the Cudgen cenotaph.

My Daily News will follow these and other issues following tonight's meeting.
