Battle to be mayor: Barry Longland earns a B-plus
BARRY Longland has performed well as the mayor of Tweed Shire but his spearheading of the sacking of the general manager is a black mark on his copy book.
That appears to be the dominant view among community leaders who were asked to grade Mayor Longland's performance over the past 12 months as he seeks fellow councillors' support for a second term at Thursday night's council meeting.
Kingscliff businesswoman and former council candidate Jayne Henry said Mr Longland had done "a reasonable job" except for the GM "debacle".
"We'd like to have more information on what transpired their. It cost a lot of money," Ms Henry said.
Tweed Monitor spokesman Jerry Cornford, who rated the mayor B-plus, was the only leader approached who was pleased with the GM sacking.
To improve in a second term, Mr Cornford wants the mayor and council to send a stronger message to developers.
"I think they have to develop a stance that it's a privilege to come here and developers should only come here with the very best development and nothing else is acceptable."
Businessman Victor Lapardin, who stressed that his views were his own and not that of the Tweed Chamber of Commerce of which he is president, said he had done "a reasonably good job".
"I think Tweed Heads is going in the right direction," Mr Lapardin said.
Murwillumbah Ratepayers and Residents Association president Robyn Lemaire said the Mayor had grown into the position.
"He appears to be considerate of the environmental, financial and social issues of the Tweed," Ms Lemaire said.
"There have been some surprise decisions such as the GM sacking and a cloak of privacy surrounding the decision. This has not gone down well with the community."
Cr Warren Polglase is also weighing up whether to contest the mayoralty.
