A GROUP of knitters at a Coolangatta nursing home has been making blankets to keep homeless people warmer at night.

Residents at the Domain Nursing Home in Kirra have been busy with their knitting needles creating items that will be given out later this month.

Diversional therapist Lisa Perry said the knitting was important to the residents.

“We have had a great deal of fun over past the six months knitting squares for the blankets,” she said.

Ms Perry said the residents were excited to get on board the project that extended further than helping just the homeless.

“It's a huge project with babies' beanies for the Mater Hospital,” Ms Perry said. “We have sent 1356 beanies to the hospital and more in progress.

“We have also had staff involvement and even a Tugun grandma knitting 25 per month for us to donate.”

Resident Nita Martin said she enjoyed making the blankets.

“I love to have something to do and I knit day and night,” she said.

Fellow resident Rose Cook agreed.

“I enjoy sewing the blankets together. This keeps my skills strong,” she said.
