Cross-border mega-region proposal
A REGIONAL development committee has ideas to create a "mega-region" that encompasses northern NSW and south east Queensland to ensure border issues become prominent on the national agenda.
The development of a mega-region was one idea discussed at the Regional Development Australia Cross Border meeting on the Gold Coast on Tuesday.
Regional Development Australia Northern Rivers NSW CEO Katrina Luckie said growth in the region will have about a quarter of the Australian population living in south east Queensland and northern NSW.
"This is such a growth corridor and we want that growth corridor on the national agenda," Ms Luckie said.
"We were really looking at the role of the RDA and what role we can play in the cross border challenges."
Currumbin state MP Jann Stuckey was at the cross-border meeting.
"I guess you could say that previously I have been against talk-fest but the way it was structured with small groups there were some really strong ideas that came out of the discussion," Ms Stuckey said.
"I have been arguing for the last six or seven years that there needs to be an audit of cross-border services."
Ms Stuckey and Ms Luckie agreed that the differences between the two states' health, education and transport systems are significant issues for border communities.
