Melanoma app to help Aussies catch cancer early

MONITORING your moles? There's an app for that.

As the mercury rises and Aussies hit the beach, SkinVision has launched a free melanoma risk analysis app in Australia.

According to Cancer Council Australia, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70.

Skin cancers account for 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers each year, with the incidence of skin cancer in Australia one of the highest in the world.

SkinVision's app aims to drastically lower the rate of late-term diagnoses by providing tools for self-analysis and tracking of skin health to detect melanoma.

The app has a 83% accuracy rate and is free to download during Skin Cancer Action Week between 15 and 21 November.

The idea is that the app will complement visits to a GP or dermatologist. SkinVision CEO Dick Uyttewaal says using it does not mean people should put off visits to the doctor or dermatologist.

"The app isn't designed to replace a medical expert's opinion, but instead, to provide a tool for analysing and tracking moles in between professional check-ups, and helping people prepare for medical appointments with their own personal image gallery," he said.

Users are encouraged to take a photo of the mole with a smartphone to receive an instant analysis and recommendation. The app's risk rating (traffic light outcome) for the mole helps you select the moles that should be tracked for changes over time within a personal gallery, which you can share with your doctor.

Once downloaded, the free subscription will last a year. Users just need to ensure that their location is turned on to Australia to receive the free download which is normally priced at $38.

It is available for both iOS and Android Samsung users.
