MELBOURNE CUP: Our Bart Cummings gives his race tips

MELBOURNE Cup day is the one time of the year where friends of a Toowoomba man call on his horse racing expertise - and it's all because of his name.

Bart Cummings, who works on the oil rigs off the coast of Victoria but grew up in the Garden City, has the same name of the legendary horse trainer.

But unlike the winner of 12 Melbourne Cups between 1965 and 2008, Mr Cummings said he had only a cursory interest in horse racing.

"They call me 'the trainer', (and) I enjoy it but it depends on what mood I'm in - if I'm in a good mood, I certainly string it along," he said.

"Not a lot of interest in racing - only come Melbourne Cup day, so I do a bit of study. That's all, to be honest."

Mr Cummings said his name had even gotten him in trouble with the police, who many years ago accused him of giving a fake alias.

As for the cup itself, he fancies Hartnell, Marmello and Thomas Hobson for the race that stops the nation.

"To be honest, I don't think I have ever tipped the winner," Mr Cummings laughed.

The Melbourne Cup will run at 2pm Queensland time.
