Memorial plaque to be unveiled

A SPECIAL memorial plaque honouring service people who took part in campaigns in Malaya, Borneo, Singapore and on the Thai border between 1959 and 1966 is to be unveiled next week by the Murwillumbah RSL sub branch.

The sub-branch plans a dedication service to unveil a plaque to all those who served in the campaigns.

Sub-branch president Derek Sims said the service would be held from 11am Wednesday August 31 at the Murwillumbah War Memorial.

Wing Commander Peter Jones of Tyalgum who flew Canberra Bombers with 2 Squadron RAAF during the campaign has been invited to unveil it.

“The service will be held to honour those who died during that period and all those who served,” Mr Sims said. “All veterans of that conflict as well as all other veterans are invited to participate

“Former members of the British Armed Forces who served in those campaigns are also most welcome.”

Mr Sims said a get-together was planned afterward at noon followed by a buffet luncheon of Malaya type foods at 12.30pm. Wives and friends would be welcome with the cost set at $20 per person.

He said those wishing to attend the buffet should advise the reception desk at the Murwillumbah Services Club today 24th August for catering purposes.
