Men's shed patrons hopeful
WITH the release of the state budget Tuesday, proponents of a men's shed in Tweed Heads are hoping they will benefit from community funding.
President of the Murwillumbah Men's Shed Phil Johnston said the project which has already received $58,000 from Nationals MP Geoff Provest needs further funding to secure a place for men to meet and work together.
"We greatly appreciate funding so far," he said.
"This will help us to either secure a shed or land.
"But we need both to make the project viable, so are hoping the government will see their way to helping further."
Organisers held two meetings on Monday allowing interested people to express interest in joining the project.
The first meeting drew 75 people, with the second seeing 27 ready to roll up their sleeves to make the project happen.
"We are going to form a steering committee to get things happening," Mr Johnston said.
"We will now start looking for sheds and/or a venue."
Mr Johnston was one of the team that secured a men's Shed at Murwillumbah.
"When we started out it was something new for us," he said.
"We now know the ropes, the goals to set and how realistic they are.
"It's all doable.
"We will have a great team of highly skilled retired people.
"That's a tremendous resource."
A spokesperson for Mr Provest's office said the Tweed Men's Shed project was eligible to apply for the next round of funding later in the year.
"They can apply through the Community Building Partnerships Grants," she said.
