Stars Cars: Olympian Cameron McEvoy
COMMONWEALTH gold medallist and Olympic swimmer Cameron McEvoy has had a good start to his car life.
The aquatic bullet has been a Mercedes man through and through thus far, and proving he has the potential to become a brilliant mad scientist, the Mathematics and Physics BSc student dreams of 400kW V8 twin-turbo G63 AMG ownership.
We threw Cam in the deep end with our searching motoring questions:
What was your first car?
A 2002 Mercedes ML320 SUV and it was an awesome thing. It was ideal for living on the Gold Coast and being able to throw the boards in the back. I formed such a bond with the ML that it was like a child leaving home when I sold it.
What are you driving now?
A 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 (crossover SUV). Going to this from the ML320 was a huge leap in terms of the acceleration and speed. It's just the right size for me and the surfboards.
What cars did your family have while you were growing up?
We had a giant red Nissan Patrol which was like a second home as we'd take it down to Sydney on lots of road trips. We also had some sort of grey Holden, then mum got a Ford Territory and dad a Dodge Nitro.
What is your greatest frustration on the road?
I get anxious not knowing what other people are doing in their cars.
Do you have any preferred driving music?
These days it's J. Cole, and with bluetooth I just shuffle through my phone with stuff like Biggie, The Weeknd or Dr.Dre.
If you were to pick anyone in the world to go on a road trip, who would it be and why?
If I can have someone who's dead, American theoretical physicist Richard Feynman who received the Nobel Prize in Physics. He inspired me to follow my passion for maths and physics, and had a unique way of looking at the world.
What would be your dream car if money were no object?
The Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG (bonkers 400kW 4x4 SUV known as the G-Wagen); it's the sexiest looking car and the best off-roader.
