Meth addict bashes man over a $20 debt
A METH addict who bashed a man in the middle of the street over a $20 debt will remain behind bars until March next year.
Jade Colahan, 26, had only just been released from jail when he spotted a man who owed him money walking down the street.
The Hervey Bay District Court heard Colahan got out of the car and demanded money from the man.
When the man told him he 'didn't have any', Colahan punched and kicked him to the ground before removing $20 from his wallet and taking off.
In pleading with Judge David Andrews to consider a community-based order rather than a jail term, Colahan told the court he had a 'good woman now' and had been clean for almost 12 months.
The prosecution urged the court to use caution in determining whether Colahan was telling the truth as the offence had been committed while he was on a suspended sentence and during the period he was supposedly clean.
While he accepted Colahan had not kicked his victim in the head as he had on several previous occasions, Judge Andrews said Colahan had a tendency to resort to violence.
Colahan was sentenced to a total of 18 months' jail.
