Millions to fix highway black spots

SOME of the state's worst roads are one step closer to repair, after yesterday's state budget.

The State Government more than matched the Federal Government's contribution to the Brisbane Valley Highway intersection on the Warrego Highway at Blacksoil, near Ipswich.

In the next year, $55 million will be poured into the project which is estimated to cost almost $95 million.

As part of the Royalty for the Regions election commitment, $45 million has been set aside for the Toowoomba CBD Ring Road.

A final funding boost of $60.6million will be spent on completing Section B of the Cooroy -to-Curra upgrade.

The much-needed makeover of the notorious stretch of Bruce Hwy began in 2009 and is expected to be completed at the end of the year.

Further north, dedicated turning lanes will be built at another Bruce Hwy black spot.

The $8.3 million safety project at the intersection of the Bruce Hwy and Walker St in Maryborough is funded as part of the Federal Government's Nation Building Program and is expected to take shape in early 2013.

Treasurer Tim Nicholls said the government's election commitment to spend $1 billion on the Bruce Hwy over the next 10 years was "locked and loaded".

RACQ Paul Turner rejected the suggestion there was no new money and was "pleasantly surprised" to learn there had been an "increase in funding over what Labor promised".

He said good roads saved lives and also welcomed the government's decision to freeze a proposed vehicle registration price hike for at least the next 12 months.
