Minister for Education says no new school for Pottsville
NATIONALS MP Geoff Provest kept his promise to bring the NSW education minister Adrian Piccoli to the Tweed.
But the issue of a new high school for Pottsville was quickly dismissed by the minister when he addressed the Tweed Chamber of Commerce breakfast on Tuesday.
"I'm not here to announce the building of a school at Pottsville," he said.
My Daily News took the opportunity to ask him why.
"There are not enough students to justify a new high school," he said.
"We constantly monitor the population and numbers enrolled at high schools in the Tweed region.
"In time to come there may well be a need for a new school, but it won't be in the next two to three years."
Mr Piccoli said his department looked at the demand and there was no demand at present.
In 2011 3997 students attended Tweed high schools, according to Mr Piccoli.
"In 2013 the number has dropped to 3738 and it is projected that this will drop again to about 3443 by 2018."
