Money on Kevin Rudd to call election on his birthday
KEVIN Rudd may be cooking up a personal treat or tragedy, with the federal election likely to be on September 21 - his birthday - according to political insiders.
Media pundits have narrowed the field down to three likely dates: August 31, September 21 and October 19.
The AFL grand final is on September 28, with the NRL hosting its big day on October 6, so those two weekends are likely to be avoided.
Sportsbet has September 21 as the $1.80 favourite, with October 19 at $2.80 and August 31 at $5.
August 28 and October 5 are rated $41 outsiders.
Mr Rudd needs to time the poll perfectly to maximise a wave of popularity which has seen the ALP's chances of victory move dramatically to a 50-50 chance after months of lagging way behind under the leadership of Julia Gillard.
Opposition leader Tony Abbott has said a "honeymoon" period such as this was always expected after a change of leadership.
The Opposition is pushing for an election date announcement soon, which will allow it to strategise over the release of what is expected to be a bombardment of TV advertisements highlighting ALP members and ministers bagging Mr Rudd as being incompetent and a bully after his previous leadership challenge loss.
